Our Team

Dr. Catherine Ann Cameron

I initially studied at the University of British Columbia and the University of London. Subsequent to postdoctoral research at Dalhousie University, I conducted research for many years at the University of New Brunswick, studying the acquisition of thought, language, and related psychosocial processes in children and youth.

I now conduct research at UBC as an Honorary Emerita Professor of Psychology and continue at UNB as an Honorary Research/Emerita Professor. My early studies of young children’s cognition have broadened to include: Cross-cultural studies of lying and truth telling, honesty and trust and intellectual integrity; emergent literacy; communications; young children and teens’ humour; cultural studies of early years thriving, adolescent and older adult resilience; and psychosocial stress reactivity. In 2010, our Day in the Life (DITL) team published International perspectives on early childhood research: A Day in the Life, that was translated into Italian as Un giorno nella vita: Percorsi internazionali di ricerca della prima infanzia in 2015, and was recently followed in 2018 by a book in Portuguese, Psicologia do desenvolvimento: Um dia na Vida, reporting on our global DITL studies of thriving children in transition to school.

She joined the Child and Teen Studies Lab in July 2024 and has been involved in Integrity and Day in the Life projects. She is passionate about the importance of fantasy play and is particularly interested in how kids develop their imaginary friends and worlds! Catherine Xie

Hi! I’m Catherine Xie from Nanjing, China, and I’ve been part of Dr. Cameron’s big lab family since July 2024. I’m an honours psychology student, currently beginning my third-year thesis under Dr. Cameron’s guidance, exploring how children’s experiences of shame and guilt relate to their rule-breaking behaviour. I’m also involved in the Girls Project—specifically on the “Sisterhood” team, where I help with transcript coding. In the Integrity Project, I am doing data collection and data entry (interviews with children are always a big source of joy and energy for me!) Outside of research, I’m a huge dog person (Samoyeds are my all-time favourites!) and love trying new foods—especially desserts. I feel incredibly lucky to be part of Dr. Cameron’s lab and am excited for the journey ahead!

Eden Sun

Eden is an incoming undergraduate student at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Science who joined the lab in the summer of 2024 during 11th grade. He enjoys working with children and hopes to pursue clinical psychology to emotionally help others. He is currently working on the Boys’ Asian Masculinity project, exploring how East Asian high school immigrants, like himself, adapt to Canadian aggression styles shaped by different masculinity norms. He’s excited to start his university journey—potentially majoring in neuroscience—alongside such a supportive lab community!

Jessica Song

Jessica Song is an incoming undergraduate student at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Sciences. Having joined the team in March 2020, she has been with the lab since Grade 10. She is involved with graphic design and development of the lab Facebook page, entering data for the Academic Integrity project, and being a part of the Girls’ Friendships research team. Her time in the lab has been surrounded by wonderful people, fascinating projects, and meaningful discussions! Jessica is grateful and ecstatic to be a part of the lab, and hopes to pursue higher education in clinical psychology or neuroscience in the future. In her free time, Jessica loves swimming, visiting used bookstores, and singing karaoke with friends.

Alongside her research interests, she also helps with lab managing, supporting organization and communication within the team. Lara is especially interested in developmental psychology and hopes to pursue graduate studies exploring how to make environments more accessible and understandable for neurodivergent children. She values being part of such a collaborative lab community and the opportunity to grow as both a researcher and team member. Outside of school, Lara enjoys reading, crocheting, and spending time by the ocean.

Lily Monteva

Lily is a third-year Honours Psychology student at the University of British Columbia.  Her thesis, supervised by Dr. Cameron, investigates how callous-unemotional traits influence experiences of shame and guilt, and their connection to cheating behaviour.  She is actively involved in the Integrity Project, which examines academic rule-breaking behaviour in children, and the Girls’ Friendships Project, which explores how various stages in girls’ friendships influence the use of various communication platforms.  Lily is passionate about research and committed to advancing psychological science.  She plans to pursue graduate studies in clinical psychology and is thoroughly enjoying her academic journey.
