Cross-cultural studies of veracity

We are developing a speech act theoretical model of conceptions and moral evaluations of lying and truth-telling in two cultures. Our early work contrasted the development of Canadian and Chinese children and youths’ behavioural intentions, classifications, judgments, and justifications of verbal deception in such contexts as athletic competitions and calls for politeness, modesty, and protection of individual or community wellbeing. Next, we proceeded to study Canadian children’s assessments of truth and trust. We are now commencing an investigation of the development of intellectual integrity and academic cheating. These programmes of research have been conducted in Vancouver (UBC), Toronto (U of T), and Fredericton (UNB) and have all been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
